In solidarity with Ukraine, Jorgensen Center and the Lenard Chamber Music Series will present a special concert featuring works by all Ukrainian composers. Ukrainian born violinist Solomiya Ivakhiv has united with Darrett Adkins (cello) and Melvin Chen (piano) to present an evening rich with Ukrainian history and culture. Ivakhiv and Darrett recently performed the Barvinsky Trio for Ukrainian Secretary of State Anthony Blinken, who remarked he was impressed with the piece, written by a 22-year-old student in Prague.

“By showcasing this rich Ukrainian culture, we are giving Ukrainian people voice, support and hope that good prevails,” said Dr. Ivakhiv. “We strive to bring more awareness to the Ukrainian music that was developing alongside western music despite the oppressions from the neighboring country.”

Dr. Ivakhiv was named Honored (Merited) Artist of Ukraine in 2021, her native country’s highest cultural honor. Referred to as one of the “major artists of our time” (Fanfare Magazine), she has made solo appearances with major orchestras in the United States, China, Turkey and Ukraine, and has performed at world-renowned venues including Carnegie Hall, Merkin Concert Hall, CBC Glenn Gould Studio, Philharmonic Hall in Kyiv, and the Concertgebouw. Professor of Violin and Viola and Head of Strings at UConn, she also serves as Artistic Director of Music at the Institute (MATI) Concert Series in New York City, where she presents chamber programs featuring Ukrainian women composers, young Ukrainians, and newly commissioned works.

Performances by cellist Darrett Adkins have been called “heroic,” “stunning,” “intensely involving” (New York Times) and “fiery” (Boston Globe). This “adventurous champion of contemporary music” (Strings Magazine) serves on the cello and chamber music faculties of the Juilliard School, the Oberlin Conservatory of Music, and the Aspen Music Festival and School.

A native of Tennessee, Dr. Melvin Chen has received acclaim for solo and chamber performances throughout the United States, Canada, and Asia. Chen’s performances have been featured on radio and television stations around the world, including KBS television and radio in Korea, NHK television in Japan, and NPR in the United States. He serves as Director of the Norfolk Chamber Music Festival/Yale Summer School of Music, where he also performs.
